Being an individual in the middle of the mass

This is a Syrian refugee living in Lebanon. He said that his income for the whole family is less than 40 dollars a month, which they received from the United Nations. To support his family he sold pencils in the streets as it is seen in these pictures.

The images were shared via Twitter and seen by the Icelandic man Gissur Simonarson who started a campaign to collect donations to improve this man’s life. Just before the end of the campaign, people have donated more than 191000 dollars.

Perhaps one problem with the refugee crisis is that refugees are seen as a huge mass of people, not as thousands of individuals. This mass of people is strange and terrifying, while individuals in it are not.
